What's In a Name?

Ever since I delved into the on-line world of blogging, thinking of a name for a blog of my very own was always in the back of my mind. This was before we had Master L and way before we even had broadband internet. Yes, I used to intently devour blogs (albeit very slowly when one has only dial-up internet!) while I was waiting for my university journal articles to print out. Blogs were a reprieve from the mundane and often repetitive assignments on animal epidemiology, physiology and chemistry to name just a few. I had to think of something memorable, easy to spell and kinda funky- one which wasn't taken.

At first I was really set on a particular blog name which just so happened to be some lyrics from a favourite song of mine at the time. I casually mentioned it to hubby, who, not really even knowing what a blog was, vetoed it immediately. "It's a bit conceited don't you think" he said quietly and carefully, waiting to gauge my reaction lest I jumped down his throat. After mulling it over, I had to agree with his point. I was only thinking of the name from the point of liking the song-and them being just lyrics- not that people would actually read into it that much. So back to the drawing board I went.

Fast forward a few years to just before Master L was born (so I actually had something to write about), I still had no blog name. We had moved house and adopted a mischievous dog from an animal rescue group and she came with the name Jemma. This quickly morphed into Jemima, and when she was in BIG trouble it became Jemima Longstocking (after my love of all things Pippi Longstocking & her white front leg markings looking like she is wearing stockings).

Kinda cool, kinda quirky, easy to remember, spell and not taken! Brilliant!

I'd love to hear how you came up with your blog name. Is it your children's names, your nickname, a family joke or just a combination of words you like?

  1. Mine is fairly self explanatory!
I am a mother and I live down under!
I suppose the down under is a bit of a hint that I am American? And living down under is novel for me?

Thanks for sharing the meaning behind your blog name...I was curious!

  2. Love the story behind your blog's name :))

My blog started not long after I started my PRINTS business - Scissors Paper Rock. At that time; it was an extension of my business. Now...it's just stuck!

  3. ahhh! Thanks for sharing, I did wonder where the name came from! I love how Jemima looks like she's wearing stockings, ceeeuute! I do the same thing with lyrics to songs, I'm always having to check myself as I get so swept up in my own reaction to the song or lyrics and not how other people may interpret it. I swear half my post titles are song lyrics!! My blog is named after my nanas - two of the best women I've been lucky enough to know. It just came to me and felt right, I feel like it represents me and always serves to remind me why I started my blog. I posted a little about it here: http://www.elsieandjoan.com/2012/01/elsie-and-joan.html

  4. My blog name makes perfect sense to me, but probably to no one else. Iliska is Polish for Julie (my name) and I have a Polish surname (Polish on my Dad's side back a few generations). Dreams, well... my blog was about finding my place in this world after having Jarvis. Iliska Dreams is me, a person who hopes to realise their dreams and one day live them.
